Basic facts about the capacity of lead-acid batteries

 

A lead-acid battery should deliver an amount of electric energy. Each battery is labeled stating the amount of energy the battery at least should deliver when new. A battery has an ageing process in which the main component is sulfation. The sulfation includes a successive built up of crystallized lead-sulfate, which diminish the active area producing the electric energy. A normal charger has difficulty to break down the crystallized lead-sulfate. The effect is that the voltage drops and the acidity level decrease. The result is a successive decrease in delivering capacity and electric energy. This is clearly shown by a controlled discharge, which is the only total reliable method to establish the actual capacity. The regeneration process of Cobatec restores the capacity which is shown on below graph.

Here it is possible to see the difference before and after on the voltage and acidity level.

Note that the voltage level and acidity level is more equal after than before. The total voltage level, the whole battery, is normally an indication of the capacity for electric energy. But if there are differences between the voltages in different cells then the capacity of the battery is diminish in the near future. That’s why a regeneration process must both desulfate and equalize between the cells.

The regeneration process increases the active areas on the plate by desulfate the plates and secondly equalize the voltage as well as the acid gravity.

Initial selection

Examples of activities are measuring the tension and the gravity of the acid.

Discharge

This is a controlled discharge to a certain level, in this case 1.7 V/cell which indicate the state of capacity.

Final selection and strategy

Based upon the state of health and state of capacity the way of doing the regeneration is decided. There is standard setup which covers most of the cases. Normally you always start with a discharged battery.

Here is the regenerator working during one to five days.

Verification of the result

The verification can consist of various techniques depending upon knowledge of the battery or verification towards customer to show the result.
